Custom Paper Shoppers with Digital Printing: How to Produce Them In-House

June 16, 2026· Print Solution S.r.l.

Custom paper shoppers with no minimum orders and variable artwork: how to produce them in-house with GreenBox EVO or Thunder Box. Technologies, materials and ROI calculation.

Paper shoppers are making a comeback. Supermarkets, boutiques, pharmacies, e-commerce brands: more and more businesses want custom paper bags with their own branding. The problem? Traditional suppliers impose high minimum order quantities, long lead times and zero design flexibility.

With next-generation single-pass inkjet printers it is now possible to produce custom shoppers directly in-house, from the very first piece, with variable artwork and zero lead time. In this guide we explain how it works, which machines to choose and when it really makes sense to make the switch.

Why paper shoppers are back in fashion

Paper bags have replaced plastic in almost every retail sector. But it is not just about regulation: consumers perceive a quality personalised shopper as part of the purchase experience. Packaging has become a brand touchpoint, not just a container.

For companies with multiple product lines, seasonal campaigns or frequent promotions, the ability to change artwork autonomously — without going back to a supplier every time — has become a real competitive advantage.

The problem with traditional shopper suppliers

Buying custom shoppers from an external supplier means dealing with three constraints: minimum order quantities (often 500-2,000 pieces per colour/size), lead times of 2-4 weeks, and plate or setup costs that make small runs uneconomical. The result: you end up ordering the same design every time, even when the market demands something different.

Add to this the warehouse burden: holding stock in multiple sizes and designs means tied-up capital, obsolescence risk and waste every time a product is updated.

How to print custom paper shoppers in-house with digital printing

Single-pass inkjet printers such as the GreenBox EVO and Thunder Box use fixed print heads and a conveyor belt to feed material at high speed. The result is full CMYK printing on matt paper and kraft in a single pass, with no pre-treatment.

The process is straightforward: load the flat sheet, send the file from the PC and the machine prints. From file to finished shopper: under one minute. No physical setup, no plates, no minimum order.

Compatible materials include: natural or bleached kraft paper, lightweight board (up to approximately 2 mm), matt or gloss coated paper, lightweight microflute sheets. Maximum print width varies by model.

GreenBox EVO vs Thunder Box: which one to choose?

Print Solution distributes two models for printing on shoppers and paper packaging, with complementary characteristics.

GreenBox EVO — The choice for volume production

The GreenBox EVO is the reference solution for companies with medium-to-high volumes that also need to print on corrugated board. Key specs for shopper production:

Technology: CMYK water-based single-pass inkjet

Speed: up to 30 m/min (1,800 m2/hr)

Max substrate width: 700 mm

Materials: kraft paper, board, corrugated cardboard, flat shoppers

Resolution: up to 1,200 dpi

Ideal for: high-volume e-commerce, third-party packaging producers, companies that want to consolidate shopper and box printing on one machine.

Thunder Box — The choice for starters or medium volumes

The Thunder Box is the entry-level model in the range, designed for companies that want to start producing custom shoppers in-house at an accessible price without sacrificing professional print quality.

Technology: CMYK water-based single-pass inkjet

Prints on: paper, board, shoppers

Professional colour quality with pigment inks

Ideal for medium-to-high runs with variable artwork

Ideal for: SMEs, boutiques, retail brands that want personalised packaging without the cost of an industrial solution.

Materials: what can be printed

Both machines print on porous, cellulose-based substrates. The most common materials for shopper applications:

Kraft paper (natural or bleached): the most common substrate for paper shoppers. Excellent ink absorption and high colour density with pigment inks.

Lightweight board (up to 350 g/m2): ideal for rigid or semi-rigid shoppers. Excellent print definition.

Not compatible: plastic materials, non-absorbent laminates, metallised substrates.

ROI calculation: when does in-house production make sense?

A typical external shopper order: EUR 0.45-0.80/piece (medium size, full colour, minimum 500 units). In-house production cost with GreenBox EVO or Thunder Box: approximately EUR 0.12-0.25/piece (paper and ink, excluding depreciation).

At a volume of 500 shoppers per month, the saving on variable cost alone is already significant. But the real advantage is flexibility: changing artwork every month, producing runs of 10 pieces for events or samples, updating the design autonomously with no setup costs.

With Italy's 2026 hyper-depreciation incentive for Industry 4.0 capital goods, the effective fiscal cost of a Thunder Box or a GreenBox EVO is significantly lower than the list price. Contact us for a personalised calculation based on your volumes.

Conclusion

Producing custom shoppers in-house is no longer the exclusive domain of large companies. With the Thunder Box or GreenBox EVO, even an SME can print professional shoppers from the very first piece, with variable artwork and no minimum order quantity.
